Amy Ryan Steps into Spotlight as Tyne Daly Exits “Doubt” Broadway Revival

Amy Ryan is set to replace Tyne Daly in the Broadway production of John Patrick Shanley’s “Doubt: A Parable” beginning Tuesday, February 13. Daly, who was originally cast in the role of Sister Aloysius, unexpectedly hospitalized on Friday and is expected to make a full recovery.

For performances through Sunday, February 11, the role of Sister Aloysius will be played by the understudy, Isabel Keating. The show’s official opening, originally scheduled for February 29, has now been moved to March 7.

The production also stars Liev Schreiber as Father Flynn, Quincy Tyler Bernstine as Mrs. Muller, and Zoe Kazan as Sister James. The Roundabout Theatre Company, which is producing the revival, canceled the first preview of “Doubt” at the American Airlines Theatre citing Daly’s hospitalization.

Keating took on the role, off-script, with one day of rehearsal. Daly has withdrawn from the production indefinitely to receive medical care. In a statement, director Scott Ellis said, “With respect and admiration for Tyne, we wish her the best and a quick recovery. We are grateful that Amy Ryan said yes – in a quick minute – to join our company and take on the role of Sister Aloysius.”

Amy Ryan is an Oscar nominee for “Gone Baby Gone” and a two-time Tony Award nominee for “A Streetcar Named Desire” andUncle Vanya.” She is also best known for appearing in “Birdman,” “Beau Is Afraid,” “Only Murders In The Building,” and “The Office” among her many screen and stage credits.

The show’s official opening, originally scheduled for February 29, has now been moved to March 7. The play follows the conflict between a Catholic school principal (Ryan) and a priest whom she suspects of inappropriate behavior with a student.
