When asked about his approach to the iconic Godzilla, Wingard revealed a surprising influence: his cat!

“You know, it’s funny,” Wingard said. “A lot of people might not expect this, but there’s a definite feline quality to Godzilla in this film. The way he moves, the power he unleashes – it all has a certain grace and predatory instinct. I definitely spent a lot of time observing my cat, Mittens, and how she stalks and pounces on unsuspecting toys. It might sound silly, but it really helped me capture the essence of Godzilla’s power and deadliness.”

This unexpected revelation adds a new layer to Godzilla’s portrayal in the film. Wingard’s focus on feline grace and power suggests a more agile and dynamic Godzilla than previous iterations.

The decision to team Godzilla and Kong was a direct result of the audience reaction to the last film. “I remember watching the film,” Wingard explains, “in that freshly post-pandemic environment, when things were shaping up and people were starting to go back to the theaters—and it was such an incredible feeling, because it had been over a year since I’d even been in a theater myself. Watching audiences react to the brief team-up of Godzilla and Kong at the end of ‘Godzilla vs. Kong,’ where they’re fighting against Mechagodzilla, it was just so exciting, because there was this catharsis in the air. You could tell it was delivering exactly what people wanted in that moment.”

Building on that energy, Wingard continues, “And I just thought, ‘If we’re going to do another film, you can’t separate these guys again, at least not in the context of the Monsterverse.’ The audience clearly craved seeing them work together, and that became the driving force behind ‘The New Empire’.”
